In A Camel's Story, King Balthasar follows a star thousands of miles using his most prized racing camel, "Xavier", as a pack animal. He's searching for the promised Messiah and is determined to find him. Xavier certainly did not share in his master's passion. He was very disturbed and angry about being used as "a common mule." Full of self pity he grumbles, whines, and complains during the entire journey.

Camels by nature, are much like us. They tend to be rather prideful, stubborn creatures and do not like to follow commands. They want to do what they want to do when they want to do it. As you read this story, see if you can relate to Xavier's doubts and frustrations during the search as well as the dilemma he faces at the journey's end.
